PCH Chemo/Hematology Clinic

Thursday, March 18, 2010

The chemotherapy clinic at Paulding County Hospital started in January 2006.    The obvious advantages of having a cancer/chemo clinic in the local hospital was that people could get their services in their hometown- no need to drive to get their chemotherapy and see their oncologist.  Often patients are exhausted and feel ill when their chemo is completed so the closer to home the better.

Paulding County Hospital is fortunate to have Dr. Raj Gunda available to run the clinic as she has more than 20 years of experience as an oncologist/hematologist.  When the chemo clinic started there were two patients in the clinic.  Now  4 years later, this clinic routinely sees many more patients in the clinic.  PCH provides chemo Monday through Friday if needed. Other services offered at the clinic are bone marrow biopsies and oncology/hematology consultations and evaluations.

Cindy Woodring, Kathy Webb, and Terri Meeks are three RN’s who have been trained chemo nurses with the program since its inception.  The nurses are vital to the programs’ success.  They underwent rigorous training to become certified and continue to learn by attending ongoing continuing education and keep up to date with new treatments and diagnostic procedures.  The chemo clinic staff are always available for the patients to answer questions or when issues come up.  Often they are called by the emergency department if one of their patients comes in and the ER nurses are unfamiliar with ports or issues.  The nurses are very involved with the local American Cancer Society, including local fund raising drives such as Relay For Life.
